Amanda Robb recently published an article in More magazine (scroll down a little after clicking) about Leslee Unruh, one of the most vehement proponents of not only the abortion ban, but what Jezebel calls the “chastity movement.”
Robb’s open minded take on one of the most controversial women in SD is touching, and she sheds a very human light on Unruh.
The story is intriguing, (and I encourage everyone to click and read the whole thing!) but one quote in particular caught my attention:
“I resent that if my child goes to a public school, my child gets all these birth control options and feels like a geek if she’s not having sex. You shouldn’t feel like you have to have sex outside marriage…
Leslee uses this as one of her reasons for pushing so hard for abstinence only programs, and I’m sure that others feel the same. But let’s consider the implications of the implementation of this.
If young adults are provided with comprehensive sex ed, some will have sex and some will “feel like a geek.”
If they are provided with abstinence only sex ed, some will not have sex and (following the logic) feel ok; others will still have sex but without proper education, will be more likely to contract STIs and/or unintended pregnancy.
Which is worse?
